"The birds in the above painting are known as Goffin's cockatoos, crested members of the parrot family. During my initiation in the fine points of keeping a Goffin as a pet, I realized that there's probably no cage that can keep them enclosed. They can pick locks and chew through or push the metal bars apart like master escape artists. Like most parrots, they climb more than they fly and perform acrobatics. The goffin's feathers are soft and delicate like the foliage in this painting, so I have shown one bird with his wings spread out to echo the shape of the leaves."
