A Campfire and Hard Times by Max Jacquiard

In the depression years of the 1930's, many unemployed men traveled about the country in search of whatever work they could find. Freight trains provided a means of transportation.

Though dangerous and uncomfortable and actively discouraged by railway police, there was no fare to pay. On a moonlit evening, three travelers settle around a campfire as a train rumbles across a coulee on a wooden trestle. A walk into town in the morning may result in a few hours of work or an outbound freight may carry them to another place and another campfire.
