The delightful Garden Apartment, John Mullane's first paintings to include flowers, was inspired thanks to a fly ball!
    "I was at a Little League baseball game when the ball went over the fence, and I ran after it. The ball rolled under a split rail fence, and seeing these birds with the flowers stopped me in my tracks. I went back later to do my fieldwork, and that particular day, the light on the clematis was perfect. I like to paint what I'm familiar with, and the old weathered wood, flowering vine and exuberant house sparrows called to me. As a finishing touch, I added the names of my family, carved into the fence post."
