What can I do with posters?

A: When framing posters, most people want to keep it simple and inexpensive because , after all, it is only a poster.  But, the days of standard poster framing , consisting of a thin frame surrounding a dry mounted poster covered with regular clear glass, are over. When framed more imaginatively, your inexpensive poster can give the illusion of no glass at all, and liken your poster to the original.

Remove the white border around the image of the poster or cover the white edge with matting, like you would for a limited-edition print. To ensure the longevity of your poster, dry mount it before framing to keep it from buckling , and invest in ultra-violet glass.

Plaque mounting is a popular and inexpensive way to display your poster art without actually framing it. The poster is mounted to a quarter-inch masonite or hardboard and then laminated.  The edge of the board is beveled and painted.

Another treatment is gel coating. The picture is mounted to either foam board or hardboard and then coated with a clear gel medium. This creates a wipeable surface that can give interesting texture or mimic brush strokes. A combination of laminating and gel coating can also be used.

The latter two choices are preferred options for commercial applications, high traffic areas and kids' rooms. They offer ease of cleaning - most laminates are non-glare and will not show fingerprints like glass will -and eliminate the possibility of broken glass.
