"For
as long as I can remember , I have always enjoyed being outdoors in the
Wilderness. As a boy , I dearly loved to spend Saturdays and school holidays
roaming the beautiful rugged countryside around the dairy farm near Kelowna,
where I was raised.
Later as
a youngster, I found great pleasure in hunting and fishing. I could hardly
wait until I was old enough to own and use a high-powered rifle. Shortly
after acquiring one, I wandered out on an early morning coyote hunt. While
sitting on top of a high ridge making predator calls to entice coyotes
to come within shooting range, I suddenly spotted two beautiful ones emerge
from behind a cliff, approximately twenty feet away. It was then , and
there, that I became moved by the exquisite beauty of the animals, and
something inside me wouldn't let me raise my gun. This was just one of
my similar experiences that nurtured my love of animals and nature. I never
did shoot an animal, and later sold my gun.
As I matured
I began sketching and painting what I saw in the great outdoors. The more
I painted, the more I came to realize that God had given me a talent. I
made up my mind to use this talent to glorify Him and the magnificent wilderness
that He created. As time went on my pleasurable hobby of sketching and
painting became a very meaningful daily activity. Subsequently, I enrolled
in private art lessons with Kelowna artists, Samara Carrier, her daughter
Corey, and David Daase. During this period, I developed a greater insight
into various methods and techniques of portraying my artistic talent. To
begin with, I primarily painted sceneries, but later developed a strong
sense of lighting and perspective. This valuable perception greatly helped
me in my paintings of mountains, lakes and trees. However I still longed
to incorporate wildlife into my paintings.
Today,
wildlife has become the prime subject in most of my paintings. When painting
animals, I strive for depth creating distance so one can see past the animals.
Yet I try to capture the expression of the animals' eyes.
I am often
asked about my style of painting. People expect an answer such as,
"Realistic", Abstract, or Impressionistic." I do not have a particular style. Sometimes
I like to paint using great detail so that a person who looks at the finished
work, is able to see every crevice in the mountains or every hair on the
animals.
At other
times, I paint very softly, blending the animals or birds into the background;
the observer must then search to find them. My personal style is determined
by the subject and the different mood of each individual painting.
As I continue
painting and spending more time in the awesome outdoors, I have come to
realize more and more , that I love, and always will love, painting pictures
of the spectacular wilderness that our Creator created for us all to enjoy.
How fortunate I am , that He gave me a talent, which enables me to share
this beauty of the wilderness, with others, through my paintings."
