Why custom framing?

Custom framing is becoming increasingly popular in today's homes. It's a simple way to personalize the look of your art and can give your room a much needed splash of colour.

Including a fillet will give the look of an inner frame around the image along with creating a layer of space between the mat and the picture giving it depth. Fillets can also be used as a liner with an existing moulding to add detail.

Foam core or acrylic spacers can also be used with mats to make your image appear to have more dimension. Mats can be handpainted to look like the image has been extended onto them, or even be carved with a simple design. V-grooves are another solution to add interest to your mats. They give the look of a narrow pinstripe as a border exposing the inner core colour of the mat which is usually white. This is especially effective and subtle on a single white mat.

The opening of the mat can also be cut in many different shaped depending on the style of your art. Multiple openings in the mat can create a custom "collage" effect. Oval openings work well on many needleworks, and splicing
in stripes in "team colours" is a great touch on sports memorabilia.

Think outside the box and don't assume a square mat is your only option.
